Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic class F
United States 1907 1 produced
No. 90 of the DSS&A was built as a 0-8-0 switcher by Baldwin in 1907 with works number 30179. Intended to work on the Marquette ore dock, it had to be suited for 2.5 percent grades and 14 degree curves. With 51-inch drivers and 21 by 28 inch cylinders, it produced a tractive effort of 39,000 pounds. The tender had a sloping back for better visibility when running backwards. In the railroad's roster it was designated class F.
According to Railroad & Locomotive Engineering, the order originally contained eight such locomotives. But instead, Baldwin delivered six more class F-1 Consolidations with 55-inch drivers and cylinders with a diameter of 20 inches. Even No. 90 was later rebuilt into a 2-8-0 and scrapped in 1937.
