Sri Lanka Railways class S8

The S8 is a diesel multiple unit built by Hitachi and used by Sri Lanka Railways for commuter trains. 20 were delivered in 1991 after the S7 had already been delivered by Hitachi in the late seventies. Each unit consists of a power car, four third-class trailers and one third-class driving trailer. The power car has a 1,070 kW MTU diesel engine driving all four axles through a Voith hydraulic transmission. Since the engine is located in a compartment behind the cab, this car only has a small passenger compartment.
