Boston & Maine No. 54 to 61

In 1872 and 1873, Manchester Locomotive Works built eight 4-4-0 locomotives for the Boston & Maine. They carried the works numbers 455 to 462 and received the running numbers 54 to 61. The names of these individual locomotives did not follow a common rule and were “Sachem”, “Forest City”, “Francis Cogswell”, “Minerva”, “William Merritt”, “Columbia”, “Pepperell” and “Old Orchard”.

At 66 inches, the drivers were in the same range to those found on most 4-4-0 of the Boston and Maine. The cylinders measured 17 by 22 inches. All were later reboilered, the first one in 1885. When they were renumbered in 1911, one had already been scrapped and the others received the numbers 641 to 647. After this it did not take long until the rest was scrapped and by 1915, all were gone.
