Belgian Railway AM 86

The AM 86, also called MS 86, is a type of two-car electric multiple units for operation under 3 kV DC. The designation comes from the year when production started. Mostly called “Sprinter”, they are also called “diving goggles” due to their special windscreen design. Each set consists of a powered car with four traction motors and a non-powered driving trailer. The first batch consisted of 35 sets, which were introduced into service in 1988.

A second batch of 35 was ordered in 1989 and is sometimes also called AM 89 or MS 89. Production was halted in 1991 when only 17 of the second batch had been completed. Originally, they were mainly used for commuter services around Brussels. All were modernized between 2012 and 2016 and from 2021, they were equipped with ETCS. Currently, they are scheduled to remain in service until 2033.
