The reference for locomotives and railcars

New York Central class K, later I-80

United States 1901 28 produced
F.W. Blauvelt

The class K, later known as I-80, was a series of Atlantic express locomotives built for the New York Central's subsidiaries. Compared to the NYC's own class I it had many similarities, but half an inch less cylinder diameter. Both had Stephenson valve gear and a driver diameter of 79 inches. To aid starting on tracks with a high permitted axle load, both had a “traction increaser” that increased the load on the driving axles by 10,000 or 15,000 pounds. A drop-down water scoop was installed in the tenders to fill up the tender on the run. Between 1901 and 1903, ALCO-Schenectady built a total of 28. 16 of these were for the Michigan Central, ten for the Canada Southern and two for the Toledo, Canada Southern and Detroit.
