The class DL consisted of six 4-8-0 tender locomotives built by Beyer, Peacock & Co. in 1923. They were derived from the Uganda Railway class GD and carried the works numbers 6128 to 6133. Their boilers were equipped with a Belpaire firebox and a Robinson superheater. Originally built for wood burning, they were actually fired with coal instead that had a sufficient calorific value. Later they were rebuilt to burn oil. Their original running numbers were 200 to 205 and were later changed to 300 to 305. When the east African Railways were founded in 1948, they became class 23, with the numbers 2301 to 2306. 2302 has been preserved and now is on static display in Nairobi.
