Ukrainian Railway series ВЛ40^У

In order to solve their shortage of passenger locomotives, Ukrainian Railways started to rebuild halves of their ВЛ80^T two-section locomotives into separate locomotives in 2004. They equipped each half with two new cabs similar to those of more modern locomotives and with updated control equipment. The railway's own shops at Zaporizhzhia and Lviv created a total of 48 new locomotives of the new type ВЛ40^У. They are being used on flatter main lines, as they do not have enough power for steeper lines.
