Austrian Federal Railways class 5047

The class 5047 is a four-axle diesel railcar that was developed by Jenbacher in the eighties to replace older railcars. In its general layout it was based on the Bundesbahn class 427. Likewise, each end has a cab. Additionally, there is the two-car class 5147 with a total of only two cabs, that is similar to the German class 428. To save costs, the 5047 is being operated only by one person. It is being powered by a 570 hp MTU engine that drives both axles of one bogie via hydraulic transmission. 

Between 1987 and 1995, the ÖBB took delivery of 100 railcars of the class 5047. Two each were ordered by the Steiermärkische Landesbahnen and by the GySEV. In Germany, the NVAG ordered one for the Niebüll–Dagebüll line. With the introduction of the Siemens Desiro and the electrification of some lines, some class 5047 railcars became surplus. So seven were sold to the GySEV in 2011 and in late 2022, the first ones were withdrawn. In the future the demand will further drop, partially due to the planned introduction of battery railcars in 2028 on non-electrified secondary lines.
