At the beginning of the fifties, the Irish Railways ordered a number of railcars which were nearly identical to the AEC railcars of Northern Ireland, which were in turn based on the earlier GWR AEC railcars. Each one had a body constructed by Park Royal and two 125 hp AEC engines. Each one could haul up to two trailers. Additionally, a small number of driving trailers was built.
After the 60 motor cars built by Park Royal, six more were constructed at Inchicore. They could operate in combinations of up to four motor cars and were used for all kinds of trains, also for important express services. In the seventies, a number was rebuilt to unpowered coaches for push-pull trains. They were withdrawn in the mid-eighties with the introduction of DART.
