Polish State Railways Pm36

German Reichsbahn class 186

Poland 1937 2 produced
Pm36-1 at the 1937 Paris World Expo Narodowe Archiwum Cyfrowe

In 1937, Fablok built two fast, light Pacific express locomotives for PKP. Their task was to haul 300-tonne trains at 140 km/h. The new design had only two cylinders with simple expansion, but a boiler pressure of 18 bars that required high-grade chromium steel. While Pm36-1 was delivered fully streamlined, Pm36-2 only had Wagner-style smoke deflectors. On the other hand, only the second one was equipped with a double Kylchap blast pipe.

Although they performed well, where was no series production due to the war. Additionally, it soon became clear that only a few stretches of the Polish rail network were suited for high speeds. Pm36-1 came to the Reichsbahn and was numbered 18 601. After the streamlining had been removed, it was used for testing at Grunewald. It came to the Soviet Union after the war and was withdrawn in 1952. Pm36-2 was placed into regular service by the PKP in 1947 and was used until 1970. It was then brought to the museum at Warsaw. A restoration to working condition took place in 1995.
