The SLT, what stands for “Sprinter Lighttrain”, is an electric multiple unit for suburban and commuter traffic. “Sprinter” is also the name for a service type of the NS that uses trains with many doors and good acceleration for lines with many stops. The SLT was designed by a consortium of Bombardier and Siemens and is based on the German class 425 S-Bahn units.
69 four-car sets were built by Bombardier and 62 six-car sets by Siemens. The main point of criticism is the absence of toilets in these trains, since they are being used for longer runs than originally planned. After protests, the NS started to install toilets in 2021.
