Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes No. 23

No. 23 of the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railway was the largest two-foot gauge locomotive in the United States. It was built in 1913 by Baldwin for freight service with construction number 40733 for a cost of $7,625. It was a 2-6-2 with a saturated boiler and service weight of 31 and a half tons without tender.
Baldwin also delivered 2-6-2 No. 24 in 1919, but this was still smaller than No. 23. The line closed in 1935 and in August of the following year, No. 23 was scrapped. Currently the Brecon Mountain Railway in Wales is constructing a working replica of the locomotive after original plans.
