Finnish Railway class B1

Of a total of nine 0-4-2ST saddle tank locomotives operated by the Finnish State Railways, eight were of the type B1 shown here. They were built by Beyer, Peacock of Manchester for shunting service along the Riihimaki-St.Petersburg line. The first two were completed in 1868, one in 1873, three in 1875 and two in 1890. The oldest ones had a boiler pressure of 120 psi, what was increased to 145 psi for the later ones. The cylinders measured 14 by 20 inches, with a driver diameter of four feet an one inch. As opposed to their smaller B2 sister, they carried 640 imperial gallons of water and two tons of coal. Their withdrawals were between 1924 and 1928. The first one, No. 9, is the oldest preserved locomotive in Finland and is on display in the Finnish Railway Museum.
