Caddo & Choctaw No. 4

The locomotive running as Oregon, Pacific and Eastern No. 19 was built by Baldwin in 1915 with works number 42000 and is operational again since March 16, 2026. Originally built for the Caddo and Choctaw Railroad as their No. 4, it was used to haul timber in Arkansas. For this role, the drivers had a diameter of only 48 inches. Its original operator named it “R.L. Rowan” after an engineer of the railroad.

As early as in 1918, it was sold to Mexico to the Compañía de Real del Monte y Pachuca and converted to burn oil. It returned to the USA in 1923 when it became McCloud River No. 19. This railroad already operated No. 18 that was very similar, but had originally been built for this railroad. In the fifties, both No. 18 and 19 were bought by the Yreka Western Railroad when the McCloud bought diesel locomotive.

After a short time in commercial service, it was again replaced by diesel locomotives and started a career in excursion service in 1958. In 1970, it was leased to the Oregon, Pacific and Eastern Railway where it also played a role in two movies. It came back to the Yreka Western in 1988 where it only operated for one more year. After some years in storage, it again operated at McCloud for some time, before returning to Yreka were it was retired in 2008. In 2017 it was bought by the Age of Steam Roundhouse. After an extensive restoration, it is in working order again today.
