Indonesian State Railway CC200

The CC200 was the first class of diesel locomotives used in Indonesia. ALCO-GE built 27 in 1953 which were called type UM 106T by the manufacturer. They were suited for both passenger and freight service and were powered by a twelve-cylinder ALCO 244E delivering 1,600 hp. Due to an axle load limit of 12 tons, six driving axles were not enough to carry all the weight. So an unpowered, two-axle bogie was added in the center to reduce the weight on the driving axles. Like other diesel locomotives of this manufacturer, they featured the distinct “shovelnose” design.

This class proved that no new steam locomotives had to be procured for any type of train in Indonesia. From the seventies, they were superseded by the lighter, but more powerful GE U18C, here called CC201. 17 of the 27 locomotives were withdrawn by 1986 and in the nineties, only four were remaining. Of these four, CC200 15 was the only one to be preserved. Today it is on display at the Ambarawa Railway Museum.
