Western Maryland class H-3c

In 1892, the West Virginia Central & Pittsburgh was one of the railroads which bought Vauclain compounds from Baldwin to test their suitability. They decided that Kent Ridge north of Davis City would be a topographically challenging line and so they ordered their numbers 28 and 29 as Consolidations. Their four cylinders had diameters of 15 and 22 inches, while the stroke was 26 inches. With a driver diameter of only 50 inches, they could deliver a starting tractive effort of 29,328 pounds in simple mode and 24,440 pounds in compound mode.

When the WVC&P became part of the Western Maryland in 1905, the two locomotives became class H-3c No. 347 and 348. Some years later they were simpled with two cylinders with a diameter of 19 inches. No. 347 was sold to the Virginia Central in 1920 which scrapped it in 1938. No. 348 was used by the Western Maryland until 1952.
