The Mat '64, what is short for “Materieel 1964”, was an EMU of the Netherlands State Railways that was a direct development of the Mat '54. It could be distinguished from its predecessor by minimal design changes on its front ends and now had the traction motors moved towards the middle of the train. Additionally, there had been some improvements in the fields of safety and passenger comfort. Sometimes it was called “Apekop” (monkey head), but most of the time it was known as “Hondekop” (dog head), like the Mat '54. The prototype named “Plan TT” was completed in 1961 by Werkspoor.
Series production started in 1964 and included the two-car Plan V and four-car Plan T. Due to the high demand, production also took place at the German companies DÜWAG and Talbot. By 1976, 246 Plan V and 30 Plan T had been completed. For the most time they had been used for stopping trains, but sometimes also for intercity services. The Plan T sets originally had a buffet, but these were removed in the nineties. Withdrawals took place between 2008 and 2016.
