The E.405 is a locomotive for service under 3 kV DC that was originally designed to be used in Poland as EU11. It was developed by Adtranz, later Bombardier, as a mixed-traffic locomotive with an output of 6,000 kW and a design speed of 200 km/h. 42 locomotives were built in Wrocław between 1998 and 2002, but not delivered to the PKP. Instead, they received the livery of Trenitalia and other modifications for service in Italy and were designated E.405. With an approved top speed of 160 km/h, they were initially used in both passenger and freight service on the Brenner south ramp. Later they were assigned to Mercitalia and used in freight traffic only, but also in other parts of Italy.
