In Finland, the first customer to order the Stadler FLIRT was Pääkaupunkiseudun Junakalusto (JKOY) which operate the commuter traffic around Helsinki. In 2006, they ordered the first 32 four-car sets which have an increased body width of 3,200 mm to seat five abreast. Additionally, this variant is optimized for temperatures down to -40°C with a modified air conditioning system and three-pane glass. A second order for nine sets was placed in 2011, followed by the third order for 40 in 2014. In 2022 the State Railways ordered 20 FLIRT 4 for introduction into service in 2026. These will differ considerably from the others, since each of the four cars will have two own bogies instead of Jacobs bogies. They also placed options for 50 more. While the JKOY trains are designated Sm5, the VR will designate its trains Sm7.
