The Euro DuFour is a four-axle electric locomotive that can be equipped with either a battery pack with an output of 2,000 kW or a 1,000 kW diesel engine to bridge non-electrified tracks. Under overhead lines it can operate on all four standard voltages in Europe and deliver up to 7,000 kW. The locomotive body is constructed as a lightweight monocoque and the bogies feature an integrated steering system to reduce the impact on the rails in tight curves. The top speed can be configured as 160 or 230 km/h depending on the role.

The first customer was SBB Cargo who plans to replace all older locomotives with the Euro DuFour over long term. The first order came in 2024 and included 36 locomotives of which 22 will be equipped with a battery pack for shunting. The pure electric locomotives will be called Re 494 and the battery variant will be Rea 494. Additionally, there are options for 93 more. By now, no orders have been placed for the diesel variant.
