Thuringian Railway No. 167 to 180
Germany 1873 14 produced
When the Thuringian Railway tried to increase the power of their passenger locomotives, they ordered 14 tall-drivered 0-6-0 from Vulcan. These had a wheel diameter of 1,703 mm and were designed like the contemporary 2-4-0 passenger locomotives where the leading axle had been replaced by a third driving axle. They had outside cylinders and inside Allan valve gear. Despite their large wheels, they were only operated up to speeds of 60 km/h. Apparently, the design was not deemed successful and in 1880, No. 180 was rebuilt into a 2-4-0. Only No. 169 survived until the new class scheme of the Prussian State Railways and was classed as a P 1.
