The classes 111 and 113 are electric multiple units for commuter service under 1.5 kV DC. They were built from 1962 to 1989 and based on the class 421. The first 30 cars which were built as prototypes were designated class 111 and had 100 kW per traction motor, like their predecessors. Production switched to the class 113 in 1963 that had 120 kW per traction motor. Trains were usually made up of four or eleven cars, with a non-powered cab car on each end. All other cars were powered on all four axles. In total, 3,007 cars were built and today, JR West and JR Shikoku are the only companies which are still using the class 113.
