No. 41 (Model 55) at the National Railway Museum, Port Adelaide
Bahnfrend

For rural, low-traffic lines of the South Australian Railways, J.G. Brill developed the railcars of the models 55 and 75. They differed on the one hand by different lengths and on the other hand by petrol engines with an output of 68 and 186 hp, respectively. The 75 model was also combined with a trailer. They were used almost all over South Australia and were called “Barwell Bulls”. Later, all received more powerful diesel engines. They were replaced by Bluebird and Redhen railcars in rural areas in the 1950s and then used in the suburbs of Adelaide until 1971.

Sydney Trains class S
Australia | 1972 | 509 cars built

A combination with a total of eight cars in December 2013 in Erskineville
David Ansen

The class S double-decker multiple units played an important role in local transport in the Sydney area between 1972 and 2019. They were recognizable by their corrugated iron side walls and were the last Sydney Trains vehicles that were not air-conditioned. Comeng and A Goninan & Co. built 287 motor cars, 67 trailers and 85 control cars. The trains were initially used as four-car “S-sets” or two-car “T-sets”. Later, the trains were put together into other combinations and all control cars were converted into trailers. From 2012 they were replaced by the new class A and B.

Sydney Trains classes A and B “Waratah”
Australia | 2010 | 120 produced
B2 in September 2018 entering Lidcombe
B2 in September 2018 entering Lidcombe
Gareth Edwards

The class A and B double-decker multiple units are the most modern vehicles in Sydney's commuter transport system. The nickname “Waratah” stands for the heraldic flower of New South Wales. They are based on class M and were developed with the help of Hitachi. Production of the car bodies is partly carried out in China by CNR and continues in Australia by Downer.

While the older Sydney Trains sets consisted of four cars each and two sets were usually coupled together, each train now consists of eight cars. Four of them are powered on all four axles. After 78 A sets, 24 B sets were built, which have modernized interiors and electronics.
