The class 2068 is a shunting locomotive designed by Jenbacher with the goals to be able to run with up to 100 km/h and to be quieter than older ones. To reach high speeds for mainline running, it got two two-axle bogies instead of the three axles fixed in the frame of the class 2067. The engine used is Jenbacher's own model 608 DS with eight cylinders that was already known from the class 2143, but here de-rated to only 1,100 hp. This engine earned the class the nickname „Flüsterlok“ (whispering locomotive). The first five were built in 1989 and 1990 and were later fitted with explosion protection for work in refineries. 55 more were delivered between 1992 and 1994.
