Polish manufacturer Pesa started to concentrate on the development of new locomotives in 2001. The Gama is a family of four-axle locomotives which can be ordered with different power sources and top speeds. The first model, the 111Ed “Marathon”, was partially funded by the Polish state. It is a 5,600 kW passenger or mixed traffic locomotive with a top speed of 140 or 160 km/h for use under 3,000 Volts DC. To cross short non-electrified stretches at low speed, it has a Caterpillar C15 last-mile diesel that delivers 420 kW.
Today the customer has the choice between a variety of variants with a top speed of 140, 160, 189 or 200 km/h of which some have been ordered by multiple Polish operators. The 111Db is a pure diesel variant with a 2,400 kW MTU engine. The 111DE is a dual mode variant that combines 2,800 kW when running under 3 kV DC with a 2,013 kW Cummins QSK60 that can send up to 1,560 kW to the wheels. Additionally, multi system variants with 5,600, 6,000 and 6,400 kW are on offer.
