ALCO / Martin E. Hansen collection

In its first years, the Magma Arizona Railroad was operated with a narrow gauge of three feet. Locomotives numbers 1 and 2 were two 2-4-2ST saddle tank locomotives with an additional tender. They were built in January and July 1915 by ALCO-Cooke with the works numbers 55027 and 55279. A curiosity is that Schenectady gave the same works number 55279 to New York Ontario & Western No. 362, a 2-10-2. They had drivers of 30.5 inches and cylinders with a diameter of ten inches and a stroke of 16 inches. Weight without tender was given with 43,860 and 45,450 pounds. The Magma Arizona converted their trackage to standard gauge in 1923, but kept using steam until 1968. No. 1 was sold to the Salt River Valley Water Users’ Association in October 1924 and became their No. 1. The further whereabouts of No. 2 are harder to find.
