After the ÖBB realized that the class 4130, which was derived from a commuter multiple unit, was rather unsuitable for international “Transalpin” service, the class 4010 was developed. These were five or six-car trains, with a power car and a control car at each end. They were popular with passengers especially because of their generous space, although only some of the cars were air-conditioned. The use in international services only lasted until the end of the 1970s, after which they were still used in intercity traffic within Austria. By 2008 they were eventually completely replaced. Some were subsequently sold without a power car in order to use them on the Hamburg-Cologne Express. Although these had been refurbished, they were not used anymore. So far there is only a short text for this vehicle. In the future it will be described in more detail.
