The DJJ2 was the first attempt of China to develop a high speed train without the help of foreign countries in 2002. It was inspired by the DJJ1 that had been built with the help of Adtranz. The new prototype was called “Zhōnghuá zhī Xīng” (“China Star”) and consisted of two power cars and nine trailers. Each power car had an output of 4,800 kW and the design top speed was 270 km/h. In test runs, the train reached a speed of 321.5 km/h. Trials showed insufficient reliability of some components, but the train was used in passenger service from 2005 for one year, although limited to 160 km/h. After this, one power car and three trailers came into the China Railway Museum at Beijing.
