The wheel arrangement 2-8-4 designates a steam locomotive with one leading axle, four coupled axles and a two-axle trailing truck. In different countries, this wheel arrangement is referred to as follows:

The 2-8-4 can basically be seen as a further development of the 2-8-2 “Mikado”. By replacing the single trailing axle with a two-axle truck, a much larger firebox could be supported without excessively increasing the axle load. Together with a larger boiler, this allowed for a considerably higher sustained steam production and made the 2-8-4 particularly suitable for hauling heavy freight trains at higher speeds.
Although tank locomotives with this wheel arrangement had already appeared outside the USA in the late 19th century, the 2-8-4 tender locomotive became famous with the “Super Power” concept developed by Lima Locomotive Works in the 1920s. The first American 2-8-4 was Lima's class A-1 demonstrator of 1925. It was tested against Mikados of the Boston & Albany on the grades through the Berkshire Hills and demonstrated that it could haul heavier trains at higher average speeds. The Boston & Albany subsequently ordered locomotives of this type and the name “Berkshire” became established.
The concept quickly spread to other American railroads and the 2-8-4 became an important type for fast freight service. Early Berkshires were built in larger numbers for railroads such as the Erie and the Illinois Central. In the thirties, the design was further refined with locomotives developed for the Nickel Plate Road and other railroads associated with the Van Sweringen group. These combined high tractive effort with large boilers and drivers suitable for high speeds and represented some of the most powerful non-articulated freight locomotives in the USA.
The Nickel Plate Road became particularly famous for using its Berkshires in fast freight service. Closely related designs were also used by the Pere Marquette, Wheeling & Lake Erie and other railroads. The Chesapeake & Ohio operated a large fleet of 2-8-4 locomotives, but called them “Kanawhas” instead of Berkshires. With the introduction of diesel locomotives, most American 2-8-4 were withdrawn in the 1950s.
Outside North America, the 2-8-4 was much less widespread and did not necessarily have the same role as the American Berkshire. Some railways used this wheel arrangement for powerful passenger or mixed-traffic locomotives, while tank locomotives with the corresponding 2-8-4T arrangement were also built in several countries. Thus, the term “Berkshire” is primarily associated with the American fast freight locomotives that became one of the best-known representatives of the “Super Power” era.
