The ЭПЛ2Т (EPL2T) and ЭПЛ9Т (EPL9T) series are electric multiple units from Lugansk, which are equipped with a regenerative brake. These vehicles were built from 2000 and consist of eight cars each. Each half-train consists of a control car, motor car, trailer and motor car, and all four axles of the motor cars are driven. The difference between the series is that the ЭПЛ2Т is used under 3 kV DC and the ЭПЛ9Т under 25 kV/50 Hz AC. Both are driven by DC motors.
ЭПЛ9Т with original shape
From the ЭПЛ9Т 14 trains with eight cars each were built between 2001 and 2005 and another in 2008. The last one has a streamlined and rounded shape on the front sides, the others have a relatively angular appearance. From the ЭПЛ2Т 35 trains were built between 2000 and 2008, about half of which also got streamlined fronts. Although more examples were to be built, production was halted in 2008 due to the financial crisis in Ukraine. There is still a half-finished train that does not yet have any bogies, which apparently will not be completed. After the start of the conflict in Donbass in 2014 and especially since the Russian invasion in 2022, it is unclear whether the Lugansk locomotive factory will ever produce new rail vehicles again.
