For the gradients on the Gotthard and Lötschberg, the SBB needed a variant of the Re 4/4II with maximum power output at 80 km/h. Since the Südwestbahn had already had an Re 4/4II modified accordingly, the SBB rented this locomotive for trials. This was followed by 20 more orders for this locomotive, which was designated as the Re 4/4III. Its top speed is only 125 km/h. Five more were delivered to the founding members of Regionalverkehr Mittelland. At the SBB, the locomotives were also used in front of commuter trains thanks to their multiple controls. Today they are called Re 430 and belong to SBB Cargo.
