Among the few Atlantic express locomotives built for cape gauge were four locomotives built in 1911 by Robert Stephenson & Co. for the Sudan Government Railways. As specified by chief mechanical engineer C.G. Hodgson, the Belpaire firebox had a wide grate. The four-axle bogie tender had nearly the same weight as the locomotive and had a large capacity of water and coal for long runs at high speeds. Remarkably, there were no sanders, as the sandy climate apparently provided sufficient friction.
