The No. 5 “Welsh Pony” and No. 6 “Little Giant” were ordered by the Ffestiniog Railway in 1867 when the existing four locomotives were no longer able to meet demand. They were also built by George England and had the same general layout with an additional tender that only carried coal, but were heavier. With their larger drivers and longer wheelbase that was still small at five feet, they ran more steady than the earlier locomotives. They became known as “Large England Class” to distinguish them from the other.
Additionally, they were fitted with a saddle tank from the start. They were overhauled over the years and got new boilers and cabs. No. 6 was withdrawn in 1932, followed by No. 5 in 1939. After decades of deterioration, No. 5 was repainted in 1984. After a second cosmetical restoration in 2013, it was completely overhauled and is in working order again since 2020.
