For north-south traffic through the Gotthard Base Tunnel, SBB initially procured 29 eleven-car multiple units from Stadler. There they are referred to as “SMILE” (“Fast Multisystem Innovative Light Express Train”), while the SBB calls them “Giruno”, which is Rhaeto-Romanic for “buzzard”. Initially they were also known as the “EC250” because of their speed. The trains are also certified for Italy, Germany and Austria. Seven more sets are to be delivered by 2026 for traffic to Germany.
