The Sveriges & Norges Järnvägar AB, which was under British control, was founded to build the southern part of the Swedish ore railway. They had ordered 20 0-8-0 freight locomotives from Sharp, Stewart & Co., not all of which were delivered due to financial problems and the subsequent liquidation. Four locomotives went to the British Barry Railway and the rest found new buyers in Germany.
Ten went to the Baden State Railway, where they were used as Class VIII b. However, due to the four axles, they could not be used on mountain routes with the narrowest radii. Three went to the French Est after the First World War, while the rest were decommissioned by 1923.
Since the Pfalzbahn's six-coupled freight locomotives had reached their limits on the low mountain routes, the remaining six of these locomotives were bought and used as the G 3. They were included in the Reichsbahn's renumbering plan in 1923 as class 557, but were decommissioned in 1924.
