After gold and silver were found in the central Cascade Mountains in the late 19th century, a railroad was built between the mines and the smelter in Everett. This was called the Everett and Monte Cristo Railway and funded by John D. Rockefeller. Their first three locomotives were 4-6-0 built by Cooke in 1893. Their task was to haul the ore trains to Everett. With the decline of the mines, the railroad and all its assets were sold to the Northern Pacific in 1902. The three locomotives became class E-7 and got the numbers 366 to 368. No. 3, shown in the picture, is reported to have been scrapped in 1923.
